These are NOT your average shampoo bars. Most importantly, they contain ZERO coconut oils*, coco sulfates, silicones, or any other synthetic ingredients. In years of searching, I have never found a shampoo bar that can say this (please lmk if there’s one that does, because I’d love to try it!). While this will be a great choice for all hair types, it will be especially welcome for those with coconut allergies, ultra sensitive/dry scalp, autoimmune conditions, or other health concerns/lifestyle choices that necessitate the need for truly natural ingredients.

Because there are no synthetic ingredients that will coat the hair or add shine to it, there will likely be an adjustment period where your hair may seem a little dull/dry OR a bit greasy while your scalp recalibrates to producing proper levels of its own sebum (oil). Stripping your hair of it’s natural oils & suppressing your body’s own healthy balance is what comes from many of the ways in which we Americans care for our hair, and we formulated this bar to change that.

Just like with your skin, your hair health is often a reflection of what is going on inside you. If you are not of optimal health, don’t eat an optimal diet, have out of balance hormones, or are fighting disease, your hair, skin, and nails will likely show it first - it’s an incredible indicator that can help to let us know when something is wrong on the inside. If you want great hair & skin, the best way to get them is to get yourself as healthy as possible with fresh food, clean water, and a little bit of sunshine!

We have found our favorite way to get the best results with these bars is to wash, rinse, spritz with a highly diluted apple cider vinegar spray (approx 5% or less), rinse, then apply a small amount of fat marshmallow fluff as conditioner (or, use your favorite conditioner). If you’re already using a shampoo bar this won’t be much of an adjustment, but may be very different if you’re used to traditional shampoos. You will not get a thick lather or super sudsy bubbles as you do with traditional shampoos - we are here to cleanse the hair of dirt build up, not strip it of its natural oils. If you use a lot of product in your hair you will likely have to wash twice.

*A note about coconut oil:

We’ve never been asked so many times for a specific product as we have about shampoo bars.

That’s because it seems like every single shampoo bar out there contains coconut oil, or some derivative of it, and that’s not ideal for a variety of reasons:

Coconut oil REPELS moisture, which your hair needs! While your hair (or skin) may seem moisturized after a coconut oil application, over time it actually leads to more brittle & dry locks (and skin).

Coconut is an allergen for many folks, and finding coconut free products can be a struggle.

Coconut oil production has been shown to be just as bad (and in some studies, even worse) than palm oil when it comes to habitat destruction and ecosystem biodiversity.

So why is coconut oil everywhere? Well, it’s cheap, easy to formulate with, gets great initial results despite long term damage, gives products a great “suds” (which is unnecessary but generally expected in products intended to cleanse), and it’s what everyone is doing, which makes it an easy sell. Brands tend to do what other brands do, and customers tend to do what brands tell them to do. The more something is marketed towards you, the more likely you are to think it’s the right choice. If coconut oil works for you, great, but you wont find it in any of our products, ever.

Go check out the "WHY TALLOW" tab!), so now lets talk about marshmallow root! The marshmallow plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries, and is native to Northern Africa and Eastern Europe, and grows throughout North America, Marshmallow root has been cherished in skincare for just as long, providing instant hydration, while it continuously works to improve the skin's ability to retain moisture, and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits. It also contains a naturally occuring botanical form of hyaluronic acid that can firm the skin and increase moisture levels. This comes from a thick, gum-like substance called mucilage within the root.

Just as much thought went into the look of fat marshmallow as it did into the ingredients and formulation. Retro food packaging is a design DREAM & the marshmallow fluff jars are iconic AF. If you knew Vellum St founder and former chef Melissa Torre in the Cookie Confidential days, you know her cupcake line, Undercover Cupcake, came exclusively in jelly jars with red lids, with a fluffy cream cheese frosting piped in thick layers above, below & in between the cakes. fat marshmallow is a nod in part to those two tasty treats, but done Vellum style, for your skin!

Big Fan

The shampoo bar is great at getting my hair super clean and helps with my dandruff-prone scalp. BF loves it too. Pretty much the only skincare product I own is the marshmallow fluff. Also, Blood orange bourbon is my fav sexy soap smell! Love this brand and everything I tried so far.

I have been using shampoo bars for a few years, and fell in love with Fat Marshmallow after trying it. I have a very dry scalp, and after washing my hair with other shampoos my scalp would tingle and burn, and would get flaky in drier weather. After switching to Fat Marshmallow my scalp feels SO much healthier and less dry, and feels less greasy between shampoos. I do notice a bit of buildup on my hair if I'm swimming often, but an apple cider vinegar spritz takes care of that. It also smells amazing and I think lathers well (or just as well as other shampoo bars). Highly recommend!

i started using shampoo bars around 2019 and have had my fair share of shampoo bar experiences. i’ve tried out l*sh, eth*que, and a few bulk refill house brands. i also have pretty thick and long normal-ish hair; i wash my hair at least once a week, depending on the weather. the main issues i run into when using shampoo bars are cleaning power, longevity, and scent.

i love the fat marshmallow shampoo bar. as someone with a scalp on the drier side, i find myself navigating the balance between a shampoo bar that isn’t too stripping, but still leaves me feeling clean after a shower. this shampoo bar leaves my hair feeling full, clean, and healthy. i have slightly wavy hair, but since i started using fat marshmallow, the texture in my hair has become wayyy more evident. washing my hair once week, i find a bar lasting about a month and a half. the scent: yummm. the scent is a light, sweet vanilla. i find that it doesn’t stick around for very long after a shower- but i actually prefer that as someone who can get a lil nauseous from strong scents, depending on the day.

i’ve fully switched over to using fat marshmallow and will continue to use it as long as it is being made. i’m hoping it never gets discontinued! i’ve even fully converted my boyfriend who is more specific about his shampoo than me. my one bad take is that i wish they were a little easier to hold- i love the bubble shape sooo much, but i think it could be improved on. in far marshmallow’s defense, i do have small hands so maybe that’s something on my end.

bottom of the line is- buy this shampoo bar if you’re looking for hair that feels clean, but without being too stripping. i love vellum street!

A shampoo bar you can count on

I've tried coconut oil-based shampoo bars but I like Vellum's tallow bars far more. They provide just enough lather and a lovely vanilla scent while getting my kinky-coily hair clean and moisturized. I'm looking forward to seeing how tallow's nutrients will support my hair over time.
